Attempt to access a FTP server results in a "requires authorization" error message

Description

Attempting to access a FTP server results in the following error message when using Internet Explorer

 "FTP server requires authorization"

Summary

Internet Explorer uses a unique way for users to specify a username and password. Internet Explorer will not prompt users to authenticate, so if the FTP server does not allow anonymous access you will receive the above 'authorization' error message

Solution

There is only one supported way to specify a username and password to use for the remote FTP server via a proxy in Internet explorer, you must enter the username and password in the URL e.g.

 ftp://user:pass@someserver.com/

Alternatively you could use a different browser, if you use Firefox or Chrome you will get a pop-up login dialog when you go to an FTP server that does not allow anonymous access.
