Problems with downloading auto-updates
Posted by Matt Parker on 18 March 2011 05:05 PM

Symptoms

Downloading of automatic updates for applications such as Antivirus, spyware, Windows Updates etc fails even though normal Internet access appears to work without problems.

Summary

This problem could be caused by either caching or by using Kaspersky AntiVirus for WinGate (KAV). These applications use the BITS service which does partial downloads but KAV requires the entire file for scanning purposes so it prevents partial downloads.

Solution

Disable cache lookups for update sites

Create a KAV scanning exception
