WinGate licenses are perpetual – they never expire. If you were to place a version 5.x license into a version 6.x installation then that installation will be licensed for the features of that version 5 license.

For example, WinGate 6.x has a new feature added to the license; an IMAP Server. A version 5.x license in a version 6.x installation will not permit access to the IMAP Server because that feature was never available when the license was purchased.

Allowing earlier version license to be used with the latest release of WinGate means you can always expect the maintenance to the original software features you purchased.

Purchased licenses will have a particular license type, size and are perpetual hence they will not expire.

Activating a Purchased license:
Purchased Licenses can be entered into the License Manager application which can be located through the GateKeepers Help menu. When entering a purchased license key and licensee name into the License Manager you need to take care that no white spaces (e.g. “ “) are at the end or beginning of the license key. After entering the key you can then follow the wizard to complete the licensing of your installation.

Moving a purchased license.
Purchased licenses need to be deactivated before moving to a new computer; there are four ways to facilitate the deactivation of a license.
- Via the License Manager Application.
- Send an email to activation@qbik.com
- Create a support ticket by sending an email to sales@qbik.com

License Types
There are three different license types that can be used in WinGate: Standard, Professional and Enterprise. The differences between these licenses can be reviewed here.

Changing an existing license type:
- Navigate to the purchasing web page.
- Select “Upgrade/Renew a License”.
- Enter your license key and licensee name.
- Select “Renew version protection and upgrade”.
- You will then be shown your upgrade options and prices – complete the wizard if you would like to upgrade.
*Please note that licenses cannot be downgraded.

License Sizes
The License Size is based off the amount of concurrent connections connecting to / through WinGate. An easy way to details how this works is through some example on when the license count is applied - and at the bottom of this article is also a list of servers and services in WinGate that do not consume license counts:

Example when a concurrent connection is used or not used.
LAN Client 1:
Is playing a game on a remote server in Australia, is downloading a file through the WWW Proxy Server, and is checking his email every minute.
That will consume one license count.

LAN Client 2:
Is browsing web pages and has a MSN Messenger chat open with a friend.
That will consume one license count.

WinGate Server Desktop:
The WinGate Servers desktop is using WinGate’s WWW Proxy Server to be able to browse web pages, and also is using a direct connection to remote control a computer at their home.
That will NOT consume a license count. Connections originating from a known adapter in the WinGate computer will not consume a license count. Direct connections to the internet will not consume a license count.

Third Party Web server on actual WinGate Server and Internet Client 1:
Internet Client 1 in Japan connects to a website being served from the actual WinGate computer in New Zealand – the only option that has been configured in WinGate is to open the port.
That will NOT consume a license count.

WinGate Web server functions and Internet Client 2:
Internet Client 2 in Japan connects to a Website being served by WinGate’s WWW Proxy Server --> Webserver option in New Zealand.
That will consume a license count.

Third party Web Server that is on a LAN Client behind WinGate and Internet Client 3:
Internet Client 3 in Japan connects to a Website that is being redirected through WinGate in New Zealand.
That will consume a license count. Please note when the internal web server responds, it will still use the license count that was applied to the Internet Client 3 user.

Administrator is at home, but wants to monitor connections passing through GateKeeper at the office:
That will NOT consume a license count. The GateKeeper connects to the Remote Control Service. The Remote Control Service does not consume a license count hence this will not consume a license count.

Changing the license size:
- Navigate to the purchasing web page.
- Select “Upgrade/Renew a License”.
- Enter your license key and licensee name.
- Select “Renew version protection and upgrade”.
- You will then be shown your upgrade options and prices – complete the wizard if you would like to upgrade.

*Please note, you can upgrade the License Type and License size with the wizard in one procedure. You cannot downgrade though.

Activity in WinGate that does not consume a license count.
- DHCP
- WinSock Redirector Service control channel connections
- DNS lookups
- Remote Control Service connections
- Delivery of mail by SMTP Server. Reception of mail does consume a license.
- POP3 Collection
- Routing
- Connections originating from the WinGate Server.
Definitions:
- VPN Node: A computer that has WinGate / WinGate VPN Only installed.
- VPN Host: The side of the VPN that acts as the server.
- VPN Joiner: The side of the VPN that acts as the client.
- VPN Participants: Computers behind the Host or Joiner that need to participate in the VPN

Please note:
- To create a VPN with WinGate you will need to have a minimum of two licenses.
- WinGate VPN is proprietary and will not connect to any other VPN solutions.
- Trial licenses are available for WinGate VPN

Licensing:
Purchased WinGate VPN Only licenses will have a particular size and are perpetual hence they will not expire. WinGate VPN licenses are available in two types and one of them is bundled into a full version WinGate Enterprise license type:

- Single user license:
A single user license is for mobile users who merely want to connect to the office or another WinGate VPN as required. The single user license allows for the installation of the WinGate VPN software and for use on that machine only – so it does not facilitate any extra VPN Participants on their side of the VPN.

- Gateway license:
The Gateway license is used where the VPN Joiner node or VPN Host Node has machines on its own LAN who wish to participate in the VPN. The Gateway license is available in various user quantities to cater for those machines who will be participating in the VPN.

- WinGate Enterprise license.
The WinGate Enterprise license is for the full version of WinGate. The Enterprise license includes the VPN Gateway license. So if you purchased an Enterprise license that allowed for six concurrent connections, then that will also facilitate as a Gateway license for a 6 user lan.

Scenario: All computers are connected to WinGate VPN.

Laptop 1 on internet - Single user license.
Laptop 2 on internet - Single user license.
Laptop 3 on internet – Single user license.
Laptop 4 on internet – Single user license.
Laptop 5 on internet – Single user license.
Laptop 6 on internet - Single user license.
Laptop 7 on internet - Single user license.
Laptop 8 on internet – Single user license.

VPN Joiner in England:
10 potential computers to be Participants – VPN Gateway license for 3 user LAN.
VPN Joiner in Canada:
25 potential computers to be Participants - VPN Gateway license for 6 user LAN.
VPN Host in Australia:
15 potential computer to be Participants - VPN Gateway license for 3 user LAN.

Separate connectivity examples.

1. Laptops 1-8 and the VPN Joiners including all potential VPN Participants can all connect into the same 3 computers at the VPN Host in Australia at the same time.

2. Laptop 2-8 and the VPN Joiners, VPN Hosts and all potential VPN Participants can all connect to Laptop 1 at the same time.

3. Laptop 1-8 and VPN Joiner in England and VPN Host in Australia and respective potential VPN Participants can all connect into the same 6 computers in Canada at the same time.

4. Laptop 1 can be connected to Laptop 2-8 at the same time.

*The VPN Licenses dictate how many computers can be concurrently accessed into your side of the VPN.

Installations:
- All WinGate installations have VPN Capabilities – it is controlled by licensing.
- All WinGate VPN Only installations have VPN Capabilities – it is controlled by licensing.
- WinGate VPN Only is generally used by customers who do not need the full internet gateway management features that the full version of WinGate provides.
